Edmodo, an education startup based in San Mateo, has raised a $30 million Series D round led by Index Ventures with participation from Japanese telecom company KDDI. Edmodo began as a free social network for educators but has since expanded into a marketplace for sharing teaching tools as well as creating and scoring quizzes. Founded in 2008, Edmodo has raised $87 million to date and is currently used by 36 million teachers and students across over 220,000 schools.

Adatao, a data analytics startup based in Sunnyvale, has raised $13 million in a Series A round led by Andreessen Horowitz with participation from Lightspeed Ventures and Bloomberg Beta. Adatao is an analytics platform that allows data scientists and business users to collaborate and view query results in a user-friendly format. Emerging from stealth last December, Adatao will use the latest cash to continue building out its pInsights and pAnalytics products.

Vurb, a mobile search startup based in San Francisco, has raised $8 million in a Series A round led by Redpoint Ventures with participation from Stanford University and existing investors Charles River Ventures, CrunchFund, Atlas Venture, and angels including Naval Ravikant, Max Levchin, and Drew Houston. Vurb seeks to simplify mobile search through a platform that aggregates factual information from the web and other apps into visual cards. Founded in 2012 and winner of TechCrunch's Disrupt Battlefield 2014, Vurb has raised $10 million to date and will use the latest funding to expand its team, continue product development, and build an Android version of its search platform.
