San Mateo-based investment service Motif Investing has raised a $35 million Series D round led by JPMorgan Chase & Co with participation from Wicklow Capital, Balderton Capital, and previous investors Goldman Sachs, Foundation Capital, Ignition Partners, and Norwest Venture Partners. Motif offers a low-cost online trading platform and recently-launched wealth management service for individuals to invest in a portfolio of publicly traded companies centered around a common motif or theme. Founded in 2010, Motif has raised $86 million to date and will use the latest cash to back further technology development and expansion into international markets.

San Francisco-based online learning platform Udemy has raised $32 million in a Series C round led by Norwest Venture Partners with participation from existing investors Insight Venture Partners and MHS Capital. Udemy is an online marketplace where individual tutors can create and upload educational courses, both paid and for free. Founded in 2010, Udemy has raised $48 million to date and will put the latest funding into product developments, especially around mobile, and international expansion.

San Francisco-based communications platform Layer has raised $14.5 million in Series A funding from Homebrew, AME Cloud Ventures, CrunchFund, Fuel Capital, and other investors. Layer is a framework that can be added into any mobile app to allow users to send text or video messages and share files across different applications. Winner of last year's TechCrunch Disrupt SF, Layer is still in private beta but expects to roll out to a larger number of developers soon.
