Laundry startup Washio hung out to dry
Washio, an on-demand laundry startup, announced that after nearly four years and 21,000 tons of laundry, it has shut down operations. The company had raised nearly $17 million from venture and angel investors including Canaan Partners, Pear and Ashton Kutcher.
Planet of the Apps scales up with Alba, Lightspeed
Entrepreneur and actress Jessica Alba has signed on as a mentor for Planet of the Apps, the reality series co-produced by Apple. Silicon Valley VC firm Lightspeed Venture Partners is also joining the series as the venture capital partner and committing to invest a minimum of $10 million into apps that are discovered on the show.
Compass, which runs a platform for buying, selling and renting property, has closed a new $75 million round led by Wellington Management Company and joined by existing investors IVP, Thrive Capital, Founders Fund, and .406 Ventures. New York-based Compass has raised a total of $210 million to date.
