Ride-sharing startup Lyft announced a $150M Series E extension this morning led by activist investor Carl Icahn. This brings the Series E round, first announced in March, to $680M, and Lyft's total raised to $1B. Lyft is one of 20 startups that have raised $1B or more in venture funding over the past 5 years, eleven of which are based in Silicon Valley. Deal flow in Silicon Alley is surging -- New York-based startups have closed more venture deals in 2015 than their San Francisco-based counterparts. According to CrunchBase data, venture investors have committed $2.8B across 351 deals for New York companies so far this year, compared to the $7B committed across 340 deals in San Francisco.
