Leveraging the CrunchBase dataset, Cyril Ebersweiler and Benjamin Joffe of hardware startup accelerator HAXLR8R analyze hardware unicorns and up-and-coming "ponies," identifying a list of 41 hardware companies that have raised significant VC funding or exited recently. To date, only one unicorn has IPO'd but combined acquisitions are worth over $11 billion. The largest acquisitions were done by software companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon. And hardware unicorns are growing faster than ever - Xiaomi, Nest and Oculus reached unicorn status in fewer than four years.
