San Francisco-based web publishing company Automattic has raised $160 million in a new round led by Insight Venture Partners with participation from new investors Chris Sacca and Endurance and existing investors Tiger Global and Iconiq. Automattic is the developer of WordPress, a secure web publishing platform that now powers 22 percent of the world's top 10 million websites. Founded in 2007, Automattic is now valued at $1.16 billion and will use the new cash to expand its current team of 240 and ramp up marketing.

Oakland-based art and technology VSCO has raised $40 million in new funding from Accel Partners. VSCO offers photo editing software that recreates the effects of classic analog film photography and also provides photographers with a community platform to share their work. Founded in 2011, VSCO has been profitable since day one and plans to use the new funds to expand to international markets and pursue other creative ventures.

Toronto-based education startup Top Hat has raised $10.5 million in a Series B round led by Georgian Partners with participation from Emergence Capital Partners, iNovia Capital, SoftTech VC, Version One Ventures, and Golden Venture Partners. Top Hat is a classroom response system for professors to get real-time feedback, share homework, and measure class participation, and is currently used by 300,000 students at over 400 universities. Launched in Canada in 2012, Top Hat has raised around $20 million in total funding and plans to use the latest investment to launch an enterprise product for university administrators.
